June has been marked as Colorado Pollinator Month to bring awareness to the benefits of the relationship between bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects and the importance to our environment. As a new initiative, CDOT and the Colorado legislature teamed up to declare Highway I-76 between Arvada and Nebraska as the Colorado Pollinator Highway. This area promotes pollination with native plants, and herbicide- and pesticide-free management.
This is an important effort due to increasing disappearance of pollinators. According to the Xerces Society, “more than one quarter (28%) of all North American bumble bees are facing some degree of extinction risk” and several species are on lists of near extinction.
Join us as local beekeepers and other habitat experts will be available to answer questions and teach about pollinators on Sunday, September 17 at our new Trail Walk and Country Fair event. Tickets are available through Gesture for $25 per family. Lunch is included!
